"The album filled with me, just as I am, as Miyeon."
Miyeon is (G)I-DLE's main vocalist. She has a warm and distinctive voice that caught the attention of many. The star has many characteristics that allow her to be likeable.
The idol is trying her hands on a solo debut. Miyeon is reaching out to the public with a color and message of her own, five years after her debut. The Miyeon we are soon to witness is yet another different Miyeon than the one we know in (G)I-DLE.
(G)I-DLE's concept was always a very tough and confident concept. The messages were always relayed in the form of music in Latin pop, tango pop, hip-hop, R&B and more.
Now, Miyeon has people's full attention onto her. The idol spoke, "MY is inspired by my name (Miyeon) and the significance of me. It's an album full of myself." The star seemed confident in her upcoming collection.
Miyeon held a press conference for the upcoming album, "MY" on April 27th at a cafe in Seoul, Mapo district.
◆"A solo album from the main vocalist"
Miyeon is the third member to debut with a solo album. The first to emerge as a solo artist was rapper Soyeon, followed by sub vocal member Yuqi. We question if the star has any pressure debuting as a solo artist as the main vocalist of the group.
The soon-to-be solo artist commented, "Rather than feeling pressure, I had worked extra hard to bring justice to our group's name (G-DLE) as a member of the group. I was also excited to try something new."
"MY" is allegedly an album full of Miyeon, as herself. "It's filled with music I wanted to do and everything I had wanted to show. But I didn't obsess over it."
Rather than being too focused on the album, Miyeon had looked back to her past self. "I had looked back to when I first wanted to sing. I had thought a lot about what I wanted to show to the public, what kind of music and what kind of songs I wanted to appear before them."
Miyeon reveals that her members were a great support system, "They helped me pick out my songs, complimented and left comments. They also really like the title track and sing along to it. Yuqi also helped in the making of the songs."
◆ "I want to do as my heart pleases"
The title track is called, "Drive." The message behind the song is to hold onto your authentic self but always look for improvement within. The track is an encouraging song to those who find themselves in hardship.
Miyeon commented, "It's something to tell oneself when entering a new chapter in our lives. It's very appropriate with the spring season and it allows one to feel good when listening to it."
"Drive" is a rock genre. "The track is different from what most people are familiar with in (G)I-DLE. I chose this one because it's different from anything I've ever put out there."
The track does the singer justice with her impeccable vocal skills. Miyeon is great at using her soft voice to control the tempo and pace of the song. "It's a track you think of when going for a drive as the cool wind brushes against you."
Miyeon also picked out one aspect of the song she'd like for people to pay attention to. The singer sings "I want to do as my heart pleases, for me" at one point in the song. Miyeon commented, "I like this part of the song because of how it signified a road for myself and not for anyone else."
"Maybe it's something I needed as reassurance as a first time solo artist. It'll be tough, it's a message for myself."
◆"Miyeon's hidden diary"
Miyeon had worked especially hard on this album. The singer is fond of not just her title track, but all of the songs in the album.
The album consists of a total of six tracks. The album contains genres of all kinds. The other songs in the album are "Rose", R&B and Funk genre "Softly", A powerful yet gentle "TE AMO", "Charging, Feat. JUNNY", and a ballad "소나기" (Downpour).
"소나기" (Downpour) was written and given as a present from member Yuqi. The album is also Miyeon's first experience with composing a song. "The song was originally an optimistic tune. However, the more I heard it, the more I felt it was giving off more blue and gloomy vibes. I had suggested we change the lyrics to Yuqi."
Miyeon had traced back to her roots when she read her previously written diaries. "I read my diary from when I was in my early twenties. I wrote about my daily life, and feelings after I watched movies or dramas. It went well with the atmosphere of the song."
The singer also mentioned member Yuqi and what it was like working with her. "It was comfortable and fun. Yuqi gave me a number of songs to choose from and I chose that one (downpour). We were able to make a good song due to Yuqi's detailed and observant nature."
"TE AMO" is just as enchanting. "The tune is on the more powerful side. The lyrics are cheerful but we expressed it with more emotions. I am fond of the song since it's one I 'd like to dedicate to my fans."

◆ "Miyeon's color to continue to work its magic"
This year marks Miyeon's fifth year in the music industry. She's worked in a number of things from group promotions, soundtracks, features, music show hosts, Live show hosts, and now a solo album.
Miyeon looked back on her five years in the industry. "I can't believe it's been five years since my debut. Time truly flew by. I think a part of it is because we weren't able to see our fans for a long time due to the pandemic."
(G)I-DLE returned with a comeback after three months with "Tomboy." The track is still charting high and is seeing great success. Miyeon spoke, "We're very happy to see it doing well since we put a lot of thought and effort into that album."
We questioned Miyeon on her goals and dreams regarding her solo career. Miyeon commented, "I want to be a comfortable support system. I had dreamt of the career that I have now through my seniors in the industry. I hope I can be of something similar to others."
"I was a trainee for a long time. There were a lot of moments after my debut, that I found happiness in, and I had a lot to be thankful for. Therefore, I want to be an optimistic and bright person that the public can look up to. I want to continue to do music as such."
Miyeon is set to release "MY" on various music platforms on April 27th at 6pm(KST).
