The drama ‘The Idol’ starring girl group BLACKPINK Jennie as an actor, has been invited to the out of competition section of the Cannes Film Festival.
On April 13 (local time), the 76th Cannes International Film Festival announced a list of out of competition invited films at the UGC Normandie Theater in Paris, France.
In addition to director Kim Jee-woon's ‘Cobweb’ released by the Cannes Film Festival, ‘The Idol (Sam Levinson)’, ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (director James Mangold)’, and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon (Martin Scorsese)’ were listed.
‘The Idol’ is an HBO series produced by famous pop artist The Weeknd and tells the story of all the relationships between emerging pop idols and the music industry. In addition to Jennie, a large number of world-class artists such as The Weeknd, Lily Rose Depp, and Troy Sivan will appear.
In particular, ‘The Idol’ drew attention as Jennie's first acting challenge. After casting in July last year, Jennie said through her agency YG Entertainment, "As soon as I read the scenario, I found it so attractive that I wanted to work on it," adding, "I'm very excited, I'll work hard”.
Attention is also focusing on whether Jennie will attend the Cannes Film Festival. In a related development, a YG Entertainment official said, “She was invited. Whether she will attend or not is yet to be decided”.
It has not been confirmed whether Jennie will attend the Cannes Film Festival, but more public attention is being paid to whether she will enter the Cannes Film Festival as an actor. Also, expectations are high on what kind of character she played.
