"Why Does Kim Nam-gil Wield a Gun?"... 'Song of the Bandits,' Intertwined Destinies
by. Gawon Park

Actor Kim Nam-gil is undergoing a transformation into a bandit leader who wields guns to protect the people of Joseon.

On the 4th, Netflix released promotional stills for 'Song of the Bandits', which promise to deliver intense narratives of intertwined fates and the complexities of the era.

'Song of the Bandits' is an action-packed historical drama set in 1920 during the chaotic times of Gando. Gando is a lawless land where China's land, Japan's money, and Korea's people come together. It tells the story of people coming together to defend their territory.

The released stills capture the appearance of the characters who have gathered in Gando for various reasons. First is the striking image of the protagonist, Lee Yoon (played by Kim Nam-gil). He is a man who went from being a slave to serving in the Japanese army, making significant achievements.

Lee Yoon suddenly leaves for Gando, leaving everything behind to repay a tragic debt incurred six years ago. There, he encounters another tragedy of Joseon.

In Gando, he forms a group of thieves, partnering with Choi Chung-soo (played by Yoo Jae-myung), a former righteous army leader who has now settled in Gando for the sake of his family.

The stills also hint at Nam Hee-sin's (played by Seo Hyun) perilous mission. She is a character with a dual identity, an independence activist who disguises herself as an official in the Joseon Governor-General's Railroad Department to collect independence funds.

Heesin plans an operation to secure independence funds, and in the process, she employs the gunman Eonnyeoni (played by Lee Ho-jung). They attempt to steal funds related to the critical project of the Gando Railway Line under the Joseon Governor-General's administration.

The relationships surrounding Lee Yoon are unveiled, including the significant connection between him and Eonnyeoni (played by Lee Ho-jung) and the impending confrontation between Lee Gwang-il (played by Lee Hyun-wook) and Lee Yoon.

Kim Nam-gil stated, "The title implies sound of a sword, and that distinctiveness was intriguing and fun for me." Seo Hyun added, "The characters were vivid, and they had multifaceted stories, which is why I chose this project."

Lastly, Yoo Jae-myung mentioned, "It's a work that combines various stories within the genre of action historical drama. The struggles of people who lost their homeland and their determination to start anew were appealing."

An official from the production team stated, "Unique characters with distinct personalities are entangled in a fresh narrative. They unite in pursuit of railroad construction funds being transported to Gando, involving bandits, independence fighters, Japanese soldiers, and more. Please look forward to the dynamic story of the wilderness."

Meanwhile, 'Song of the Bandits'will be available on Netflix starting on the 22nd.
