"It's the coldest, driest character I've ever played." (Kang Dong-won)
Actor Kang Dong-won transforms into an designer of murder. A face that evokes death even without guns and knives. It's the darkest he's ever shown.
As an INTJ, the character shares many similarities with Kang Dong-won. He says, "I empathized with him a lot because he's a perfectionist. I imagined, 'I would have done this if I were him,'" he confessed.
The production team of the movie "The Plot" held a production report at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall in Seoul on the 29th. Kang Dong-won, Lee Mu-saeng, Lee Mi-sook, Kim Shin-rock, Lee Hyun-wook, Jung Eun-chae, and Tang Jun-sang were present.
Kang Dong-won said, "When I first received the script, it was so creative that I chose it. It's been a long time since I returned to movies, and I'm happy to introduce it to the audience," said Kang.
"The Plot" is a crime drama. Young-il (Kang Dong-won) is an designer who designs the perfect accidental death for his clients. He manipulates perfectly his contract killings with a thorough plan without any mistakes.
However, when Young-il's most trusted colleague dies in an accident, he can't shake the suspicion that his death was designed by someone else.
"I'm pleased to be back in a movie after five years," says director Lee Yoseop, "It's not something I could have written on my own. I spent a very long time writing the screenplay."
The film is a remake of the Hong Kong film "Accident," which was released in 2010. "The time and geographical background are different from the original, so I was worried about how to use those aspects," Lee said.
"We tried to make it feel like real by introducing a wreck car YouTuber played by Lee Dong-hwi. We tried to incorporate the Korean vibe into the movie."
An outstanding cast of actors like Kang Dong-won, Lee Mu-saeng, Lee Mi-sook, Kim Shin-rock, Lee Hyun-wook, Jung Eun-chae, and Tang Jun-sang play characters with their own desires.
Kang Dong-won plays Young-il, a designer. Together with his team, he manipulates murders into accidents. He is known as a canned man because there is no record of his name, age, or origin.
"He has a team, but he's a loner who makes his own judgments," he says, adding, "He's a perfectionist who doesn't trust anyone. It's the most cold and dry character I've ever played," he explains.
"What I focused on was to erase my emotions and keep a poker face. I tried to give the impression that I was always thinking of a solution under any circumstances. I tried to hide my emotions even in unexpected moments." (Kang Dong-won)
Director says, "I felt blessed every time I looked at the camera because Kang was so good-looking. I tried to capture the black side from a handsome man, but with human eyes."
Lee Mi-sook works for Kang as a colleague in the team. She is an indispensable figure in the manipulation and execution of the incident.
"We had really good chemistry as a team," said Lee Mi-sook. Kang has a lot of good things to start with," she said, adding, "He has so many good things that I wanted to spoil him."
Teamwork was great. They were full of praise for each other. The youngest actor, Tang Jun-sang, said, "I approached every scene with a pleasant trepidation, not nervousness. It was a scene where I felt a lot of 'this is how it should be'."
"I thought, 'How can we get all these people back together again,' and it was so good that I was in awe of every moment," says director Lee, adding, "It's one of the highlights of the movie to have actors who are rarely seen together in one movie."
"The Plot evokes death without guns, knives, or fists," says Lee, "but you can feel the terror of everyday life." he said.
"What makes our movie different is that it hides behind every character. The process of finding it will make the audience feel different from other crime genre movies."
"The characters are at a disadvantage when they tell each other the truth. It will be interesting to see the point where people are confused about what is true or false in their daily lives."
"From Young-il perspective, all the characters are strange and unreliable," he said, adding, "If you watch it from that perspective, you will enjoy it."
"The Plot" opens in theaters next month on May 29.
