Byeon Woo-seok's over-policing goes to the National Assembly

"We will take measures to prevent a recurrence." (Incheon Airport)

Incheon International Airport Corporation President Lee Hak-jae has responded to the controversy over actor Byeon Wooseok's excessive security. Lee Hak-jae attended a plenary meeting of the National Assembly's Committee on Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism on the 17th.

"What was lacking at Incheon International Airport," said Jeon Yong-gi, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea. "It can only be seen as the negligence of the corporation's management. Was there no consultation before the security guarding?" he asked.

Lee Hak-jae replied, "Security companies consult with the police. The construction company is also informed by the police. We are responsible for the safety of civilians from the rear," Lee said, adding, "This is the first time this has happened since the airport was built, so it was hard to predict."

Representative Jeon Yong-gi said, "They controlled the gates and blocked the passage of passengers, used flashlights to illuminate the eyes of passengers, and inspected tickets themselves. The airport staff should have been there, but they didn't do anything," he said.

President Lee Hak-jae said, "We are responsible for not detecting it. There has never been a case like this before where a private security company overreacted and did something wrong. We will take this as an opportunity to take measures."

He added, "We will find a way to create rules of behaviour for private security companies in the airport in consultation with the police and strengthen punishments for them."

Meanwhile, Incheon Airport Authority is considering filing charges against Byeon Wooseok's private security company. It plans to investigate whether the gate closures and ticket checks constitute abuse of authority and coercion, and to file charges.
