Yeon Sang-ho Confirms Production of Monster Creature Film 'Gas Man'

Director Yeon Sang-ho is returning with a monster creature film.

On the 8th, Netflix confirmed the production of 'Gas Man'. The film is a live-action series based on the legendary special effects film 'Gas Man No. 1' by Japan's Toho.

Director Yeon Sang-ho is listed as an executive producer and screenwriter. Director Shinzo Katayama will be in charge of directing. Shun Oguri and Yu Aoi have been cast.

The original film 'Gas Man', 'Gas Man No. 1', is the work of director Ishiro Honda, who created the film 'Godzilla', the first monster creature film. It was produced in 1960.

It delves into the dark side of the social structure as an entertaining element and sublimates it into a sci-fi thriller. Even after more than half a century, it is still considered a masterpiece.

This series recreates the original work using cutting-edge VFX (visual special effects) techniques. This is a reboot project that recreates modern Japan as a stage.

Not only director Yeon Sang-ho, but also writer Ryu Yong-jae participated in the co-script. Writer Ryu has written 'Parasyte: The Gray' and 'Money Heist: Joint Economic Zone'.

Director Shinzo Katayama participated as an assistant director for director Bong Joon-ho's 'Mother'. He presented powerful works such as the movies 'Missing', 'Children on the Brink', and the series 'Gannibal'.

Directors Yeon Sang-ho and Katayama talked at the Toho Studio set, which has 70 years of history. They spent 6 years on planning and conception, and 3 years on script development.

Director Yeon said, "I've always been interested in Toho's special effects. 'Gas Man No. 1' is a 1960s film, but it still has an outstanding level of completion even when viewed today."

He continued, "I thought it would be an exciting piece if it were reborn in a modern way," and "I sent Director Katayama a DM on SNS because I was so curious about people themselves."

He then said, "I'm writing a script, but I'm really looking forward to the piece that Director Katayama will create," expressing his expectations and trust in Director Katayama.

Director Katayama said, "In the original, there are bizarre creatures, but it's a piece that also has human drama and melodrama. I thought it would be a good piece if we added human drama with the current VFX."

He expressed his trust, saying, "I wanted to offer Director Yeon Sang-ho a role, not only because of the script he wrote with Writer Ryu Yong-jae, but also because he acted so well during the scene meeting."

Shun Oguri and Yu Aoi have previously worked together on voice acting for animations since the 2001 drama 'Search in Blue and White.' This is their first live-action casting together in 23 years.

Oguri Shun said, "I was instinctively drawn to the development that made me wonder what would happen next, and the human drama that I couldn't tell from the title at all," and "I'm thrilled to be able to work with the outstanding talents of both Korea and Japan."

Aoi Yu explained, "It's a story that feels like an unknown world, so I'm looking forward to what kind of experience we'll have. It feels like setting sail on the vast ocean. It's an adventurous spirit that's possible only because of this team."

Meanwhile, 'Gas Man' will begin filming this month. It's scheduled to be released on Netflix next year.
