"Both fans and members have grown stronger by going through challenging moments, and our desire to enjoy each moment has only grown. That's why we're looking forward to our future even more." - Kim Chaehyun
Girl group Kep1er, now restructured from nine members to seven, has returned with a renewed determination to show their growth.
In a recent interview at a café in Gangnam, Seoul, Kep1er shared, "We are determined to work harder together so the absence of former members isn't felt. We'll keep our unique color alive for those who have waited."
Kep1er's new mini-album, TIPI-TAP, released on November 1, marks their first project after the lineup change. Formed through Mnet's 2021 audition show Girls Planet 999, Kep1er recently renewed contracts with seven original members, making this the first Mnet-formed project group to continue with a renewed contract.
Kim Chaehyun emphasized, "I deeply admired the passion and love for performing that our members show. I often wondered how things would go without these members, and I'm happy we're back with a positive outlook."
While maintaining Kep1er's core identity, the members aimed to explore musical diversity. "We've revamped everything except our group name," said member Xiaoting.
The album includes five tracks, such as the title track TIPI-TAP, the dance track Sync-Love, the dreamy Drip, and the hip-hop-based R&B song Bitter Taste.
After the lineup change, Huening Bahiyyih shared their aspiration to broaden Kep1er's musical spectrum, explaining that this album embodies their commitment to diverse music concepts.
The title track, based on the hyperpop genre—a futuristic sound mixing electronic, dance, and hip-hop elements—presents a journey to find love through its catchy refrain and fast-paced melody.
"Since this was our first attempt at hyperpop, we thought it could show a new side of us," said Choi Yujin, noting the addictive nature of the "TIPI-TAP" lyrics in the chorus.
With fewer members than before, the group put significant effort into rehearsals to fill the stage with a smaller lineup. They carefully crafted formations and performances to ensure no gaps were felt.
Kep1er members are also gradually seizing more opportunities to showcase their talents. Member Seo Young-eun co-wrote the lyrics for Drip and Heart Surf in this album. Other members expressed their eagerness to write lyrics and play instruments.
"I want to contribute to our rap-making," said Kim Da-yeon, "I'm also learning MIDI composing, and my goal is to include a self-composed song."
Kep1er hopes this comeback will produce a new hit to follow their debut single, WA DA DA.
"While we have defined our color, I feel we haven't yet stood out significantly. I hope this comeback can be a moment for many to recognize the name Kep1er once again." - Kim Chaehyun
