Entertainment Industry Criticizes Martial Law Declaration

President Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law for the first time in 45 years, shocking celebrities and industry figures alike.

Actor Kim Ki-chun shared a news clip announcing President Yoon's declaration on his social media on December 3, writing, "This will go down in history. Don't collaborate with such acts."

Writer and broadcaster Heo Ji-woong indirectly expressed his outrage with a black image and the caption, "I can't stay silent anymore."

Musical actor Kim Ji-woo remarked, "To witness martial law being enacted, to see soldiers block the National Assembly—what is happening?" She added, "I don't blame the soldiers; those deployed have no choice. As fellow citizens of this country, it's heartbreaking."

Singer Lee Sang-min sought to reassure international fans, saying, "The people of South Korea will resolve this crisis in the right way. South Korea remains safe."

Actor and former special forces operative Lee Kwan-hoon took action by heading to the National Assembly. Addressing martial law troops, he said, "I'm a senior from the 707 Special Mission Battalion. I know you're here on orders, but stay calm." He added, "I spoke to my comrades—some are airborne right now. Whatever orders you've received, don't resort to excessive force."

President Yoon delivered an emergency national address late in the evening, officially declaring martial law. He stated his aim to "restore and protect the Republic of Korea."

Martial law command was swiftly established, with Army Chief of Staff Park An-soo appointed as commander. At 11 PM, Park issued the first official directive from the martial law headquarters.

National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik called on lawmakers to convene for an emergency session. Out of 300 assembly members, 190 attended, unanimously passing a resolution.

Ultimately, President Yoon lifted the martial law declaration at 4:27 AM. The government followed up with a cabinet meeting three minutes later, formally approving the termination of martial law.
