MBC Cancels Live Broadcast of '2024 MBC Music Festival WANNABE' to Mourn Jeju Air Tragedy
On November 30, MBC announced the cancellation of the live broadcast of the 2024 MBC Music Festival WANNABE (Gayo Daejejeon), scheduled for December 31, to honor the victims of the Jeju Air tragedy.
While the event will proceed as planned, including pre-recorded performances, the broadcast will be rescheduled as a recorded airing at a later date. Specific details on the new schedule are yet to be determined, as the network considers the national mourning period.
This follows MBC's decision to cancel the live broadcast of the 2024 MBC Entertainment Awards on November 29 and to transition the 2024 MBC Drama Awards, originally set to air live on November 30, to a recorded broadcast.
The Jeju Air crash occurred at 9:07 a.m. on November 29, when Flight 7C2216 from Bangkok attempted to land at Muan International Airport. The plane collided with the runway barrier and crashed, resulting in 179 fatalities out of 181 passengers and crew, leaving only two survivors. In response, the government declared a seven-day national mourning period, lasting until January 4 at midnight.
