"Curious About How Love Begins?"—The Hidden Clues in Beginning

If you're feeling the springtime blues, why not immerse yourself in a play about love and connection? Beginning, directed by Pyo Sang-ah, explores the push-and-pull dynamics of modern romance in a 90-minute, two-person play that feels strikingly real.

On March 8, Kim Yoon-ji and Yoon Hyun-min took the stage for their first performance—showcasing a raw and heartfelt depiction of relationships.

🎭 Why Is It Called Beginning?

The play is adapted from British playwright David Eldridge's original work, the first installment in a trilogy exploring love and relationships. Originally staged in London in 2017, Beginning received critical acclaim from outlets like The Guardian and The Independent, which praised it as:

"A poignant and bittersweet story capturing the essence of modern dating and single life in London."

But love is universal—whether in London or Seoul, relationships follow a similar rhythm.

💑 A One-Night Encounter That Sparks a Dilemma

Set in a London apartment, the story follows two strangers, Danny (Yoon Hyun-min) and Laura (Kim Yoon-ji), who find themselves alone after a house party.

If reimagined in a Korean setting, the scene might play out like this: A group drinking at a Korean pub, one by one, people leave, until only one man and one woman remain. Then comes the question: "Should I stay, or should I go?"

Unlike a typical fleeting encounter, their situation comes with complications:

Laura is assertive, independent, and knows what she wants.

Danny is reserved, hesitant, and carries baggage—he has a child from a past marriage.

Laura desires a child but isn't fixated on marriage, while Danny fears making past mistakes again.

🔥 Love, Control, and the Modern Dating Game

Laura approaches the night strategically, even going as far as preparing only one condom—a clear sign that she wants to test Danny before making any decisions. But when the moment arrives, what will Danny choose?

Kim Yoon-ji, who recently starred in Netflix's Lift, delivers a bold transformation in Beginning. Her character's unfiltered dialogue and sharp humor keep the audience engaged, turning moments of tension into unexpected laughter.

From Beginning to Middle to End

David Eldridge's trilogy follows the chronology of a relationship:

'Beginning'—A story about two strangers and the first sparks of love.

'Middle'—Explores the challenges of married life and emotional conflicts.

'End'—Reflects on life and love in old age, looking back on past choices.

The play suggests that no matter the time or place, love has to begin somewhere. Even in today's dating app culture, where instant gratification often leads to emptiness, the fundamental human need for connection remains unchanged.

🎟 Where to Watch Beginning

The play features alternating casts, with performances by Yoon Hyun-min & Kim Yoon-ji and Lee Jong-hyuk & Yoo Sun.

🗓 Until March 23 at Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, S-Theater.

Is this the push you need to start your own 'beginning'?
