After a series of delays, Resident Playbook is set to premiere its first episode on April 12. This marks the first official spinoff of the beloved Hospital Playlist series.
🏥 New Faces, New Department – OBGYN in the Spotlight
While still set in the Yulje Hospital universe, the story now shifts to Yulje Hospital's Jongno branch, focusing on the OB-GYN department.
The story follows four first-year OB-GYN residents:
- Oh I-young (Go Youn-jung)
- Pyo Nam-kyeong (Shin Si-ah)
- Um Jae-il (Kang You-seok)
- Kim Sa-bi (Han Ye-ji)
🌸 Keeping the Warmth, Adding Youthful Growth
Resident Playbook continues the healing, slice-of-life storytelling that Hospital Playlist fans loved. But this time, it explores the growing pains of young, freshly minted doctors.
"We've kept the heartwarming, everyday storytelling," producers said. "But since the characters are younger, it feels fresh and more relatable in a different way than the original series."
🚨 Real-Life Medical Tensions Delayed the Show
The show's initial airing was postponed due to real-world tensions in the Korean healthcare system. In early 2024, junior doctors resigned en masse in protest of a proposed medical school enrollment increase, which impacted public sentiment and broadcast scheduling.
However, tensions have eased in 2025, with the government announcing zero quota increases for the 2026 school year, and many residents have since returned to hospitals.
According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, as of March 30, there are 393 residents back at work in Korea's top five hospitals.
Resident Playbook invites viewers to witness the joys, struggles, and friendships of OB-GYN residents in a world where reality and hope collide.
