Lisa of BLACKPINK made headlines at the 2025 Met Gala — not just for her bold fashion statement, but for a controversial detail in her custom outfit that's ignited backlash online.
🕶️ Lisa goes undercover, then unveils bold Met Gala look
On May 6 (local time), Lisa attended the 2025 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This year's theme was "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style", celebrating elevated interpretations of Black fashion and culture.
Before the event, Lisa arrived in secrecy wearing a long coat covering her look. But once on the red carpet, she revealed a striking bodysuit — a custom Louis Vuitton design by Pharrell Williams, who serves as the brand's creative director.
👀 The issue: printed image draws criticism
The controversy centers around the lower half of Lisa's outfit. According to Daily Mail, the bodysuit featured what appeared to be a likeness of civil rights icon Rosa Parks on the underwear panel.
Parks is a key historical figure who sparked the U.S. civil rights movement in the 1950s by refusing to give up her bus seat due to racial segregation. Her case led to a landmark Supreme Court ruling that struck down segregation laws.
Critics online called the placement of such an iconic face on underwear "disrespectful" and "tone-deaf," especially in the context of a gala meant to honor Black excellence in fashion.
🖼 Louis Vuitton responds: "It's Henry Taylor's art"
Louis Vuitton responded to the controversy via U.S. outlet The Cut, explaining that the artwork was by renowned American painter Henry Taylor.
"The print is from a portrait series where Taylor depicts people he's encountered throughout his life," the brand stated. When asked if the figure was Rosa Parks, they replied, "Taylor is known for mixing famous and unknown faces in his pieces."
🌍 A night of highs and tensions
The Met Gala — held annually since 1948 — is one of fashion's most prestigious events, raising funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute.
This year saw a wave of K-pop stars on the guest list, including BLACKPINK members Lisa, Rosé, and Jennie, as well as SEVENTEEN's S.Coups. But Lisa's look has become one of the night's most debated topics.
