Korean TV personality Lee Sang-yong, affectionately known as "Popeye Ahjussi", has passed away at the age of 81. He died on May 9 after collapsing near his home in Seocho-gu, Seoul.
🕊️ Sudden Passing After Hospital Visit
Lee reportedly visited a local hospital that morning due to mild cold symptoms. On his way home, he collapsed unexpectedly. He was rushed to Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, where he received emergency treatment but could not be revived.
"He didn't have any chronic illnesses," said a representative from E-Made, his agency.
"In fact, he gave a public lecture just the day before his passing."
✈️ Family in Transit
His son, currently residing in Hong Kong, is flying back to Korea to arrange funeral proceedings. The wake is expected to be held at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital Funeral Hall, beginning after 1 PM on May 10. Burial details have yet to be confirmed.
📺 Legacy of a National Icon
Lee made his broadcast debut in 1973 through MBC's "Cheerful Blue-White Match". He later rose to national fame as an MC for shows like "Gather and Sing" and "Stage of Friendship," loved especially by children and Korean soldiers.

Lee personally funded heart surgeries for over 500 children and received numerous honors, including:
- Order of Civil Merit (Dongbaek Medal) in 1987
- Sports Merit (Girin Medal) in 1990
- Minister of Culture Award in 1998
His passing leaves behind a legacy of joy, compassion, and national service.
