"'Love'—that's the one word I'd use to describe this album." (Baekhyun)
EXO's Baekhyun makes his long-awaited comeback today (May 19) with the release of his fifth mini album, Essence of Reverie. The album tells the story of Baekhyun standing at the boundary between reality and idealism.
The record features a total of seven tracks, including the title song Elevator. With this album, Baekhyun expands his musical palette, showcasing a rich variety of genres.
Elevator is a romantic pop R&B track that likens the emotional space inside someone's heart to the enclosed space of an elevator.
Baekhyun participated in the lyrics and composition of all tracks. He once again teamed up with musician Colde, with whom he previously demonstrated great synergy.
"I really wanted to return the love I've received from my fans," Baekhyun shared. "My goal was to evoke memories fans have of me through this album."
Starting next month, Baekhyun will embark on his very first solo world tour, stopping in 29 cities across South America, North America, Europe, Oceania, and Asia—including Seoul.
Q&A with Baekhyun
Q. How do you feel about releasing your fifth mini album?
While working on this album and being directly involved in its production, I learned and felt a lot. It's an album that represents my growth, so I'm incredibly happy!
Q. What's the core message of this album?
I'm constantly thinking about music and evolving. This album reflects my determination to become an artist who can adapt and grow for both listeners and my fans, EXO-Ls.
Q. Why did you choose Elevator as the title track?
I really liked the metaphor of comparing a loved one's heart to the space of an elevator. I felt this song could amplify my boyish charm in a special way.
Q. Any behind-the-scenes stories or key points from the music video shoot?
The whole shoot felt like hanging out with friends—it was just fun! The synergy with the dancers was amazing, and the staff was great too. One highlight is how the music video connects with some unreleased clips, so keep an eye out for those.
Q. What should we watch for in the Elevator stage performance?
The facial expressions, the overall vibe, the stylish choreography, and melody—all these elements will make for a special stage after such a long time.
Q. Why did you pre-release the track Chocolate?
I was torn between Chocolate and Elevator for the title track. I had so much affection for both songs that I couldn't just leave Chocolate as a B-side. That's why we decided to pre-release it.
Q. Tell us about the new character 'Kkureu-jam'.
After Teoraegi, I wanted to create a new plushie character. Since this album centers around the themes of "dream" and "fantasy," and because I hope everyone sleeps well, I designed Kkureu-jam as a neck pillow. I hope it improves everyone's sleep quality!
Q. What kind of image do you hope to leave with global listeners?
I want to continue being known as "a puppy who loves fans," someone "reliable," "steady," and "humble." That's the image I want to build with fans and listeners around the world.
Q. Which song or lyric is the most memorable for you?
Black Dreams stands out. I always tell EXO-Ls, "Let's dream black dreams"—meaning, don't dream anything and just sleep deeply. It was fun creating a track around that inside joke we share. Now the whole world will hear it!
Q. Why did you choose to work with Colde again?
We first collaborated on Love Again from my second mini album. Since then, we've built a strong relationship, and now we're totally in sync. I knew that working with Colde would help me create an even better album.
Q. If you could describe this album in one word?
'Love'. This album is filled with my love for fans and my desire to give something meaningful in return. It's all about bringing back memories of me in fans' hearts. I had deep conversations with Colde and the staff to reflect that in the album.
Q. Any thoughts heading into your first solo world tour?
My biggest goal is to greet EXO-Ls around the world who have waited so long. I want to give them a tour that's worth the wait and bring them happiness.
Q. Lastly, a message to fans around the world?
Dear EXO-Ls, while working on this album, I deeply felt how much you coexist in my life. I believe the reason I can be someone filled with love is because of the endless support and affection you've given me. I hope this album fills your heart with love too. I love you all so much!
