The beginning is chaotic. The journey to becoming a family is messy but warm. Laughter is abundant, and the action? Blazing hot.
Director Kang Hyoung-chul's new film Hi.5 is the ultimate feel-good comic-action flick. With a star-studded lineup including Lee Jae-in, Ahn Jae-hong, Ra Mi-ran, Kim Hee-won, Yoo Ah-in, Park Jin-young, and Oh Jung-se, the film showcases a group of quirky individuals who suddenly gain superpowers through organ transplants—and have no choice but to come together.
On May 26, Hi.5 held its press screening and media showcase at CGV Yongsan. The cast and director gathered to reveal behind-the-scenes stories and what makes this high-energy ensemble film stand out.
🧬 The Superpowered Five
The story kicks off with five strangers, each gaining a unique ability after receiving a life-saving organ transplant:
- Lee Jae-in plays Wanseo, a girl who gains superhuman strength and speed after a heart transplant.
- Ahn Jae-hong is Jiseong, an aspiring writer with extraordinary lung capacity.
- Ra Mi-ran portrays Seonnyeo, who receives a kidney and ends up with mysterious powers.
- Kim Hee-won is Yakseon, whose new liver gives him the power of healing hands.
- Yoo Ah-in becomes Gidong, a hipster who can control electronic waves after a corneal transplant.
- Park Jin-young joins late as Youngchun, who shares a transplanted pancreas with a senior, unlocking renewed vitality.
- Oh Jung-se plays Jongmin, the only non-superpowered member, armed instead with fierce fatherly love.
Lee Jae-in noted, "Teamwork was everything. It taught me what it truly means to sync with a cast."
😂 High in Comedy
As expected from a Kang Hyoung-chul film (Sunny, Scandal Makers), Hi.5 delivers punchy humor. Ra Mi-ran and Ahn Jae-hong anchor the comedy with seamless wit, while Yoo Ah-in adds an eccentric flair.
Ahn Jae-hong shared, "The script had great rhythm from the start. We just had to ride that flow."
Ra Mi-ran added, "What makes the comedy work is how every character talks past each other—but somehow, that chaotic dialogue is what makes it hilarious."
Even Kim Hee-won, known for his serious roles, admitted, "I relied heavily on my castmates and director to hit the comic beats."
Park Jin-young said his role was more straight-faced, adding, "When I wasn't on camera, I was trying not to burst out laughing at the seniors' performances."
💥 High-Octane Action
While it's comedic at heart, Hi.5 doesn't hold back on action.
Lee Jae-in trained for 10 months, performing her own stunts and learning taekwondo to play a petite but powerful teen.
"Wire work and green screen were new to me," she said. "But being small helped enhance the contrast of my super strength."
Park Jin-young took the lead in later action scenes as Youngchun, who specializes in brawling and brute force.
"Director Kang was super clear with action direction, which helped me dive in fully," he shared.
One of the film's standout sequences? A wild yakult-cart chase scene featuring Ra Mi-ran.
"It felt like a real racing film," she laughed. "Hot, intense, and unforgettable."
👊 High-Level Chemistry
With such a large cast, maintaining balance could have been a challenge—but the synergy shines.
Director Kang explained, "I didn't force dialogue. I typed out whatever the characters seemed to be doing or saying. They wrote themselves."
He added, "These aren't superheroes in tights. They're neighbors and friends with quirks. That grounded approach helped the story feel real."
The film's ending hints at more adventures, with Sister Sledge's We Are Family playing over the closing credits.
Kang noted, "They start off fumbling but end as a true family. If audiences love them, I'd love to explore a prequel or sequel."
🎬 One for the Summer
Lee Jae-in closed the event with heartfelt thanks:
"Watching the credits roll, I realized how many people worked on this film. Everyone poured their summer energy into making it magical. I hope many people come and enjoy it!"
Hi.5 hits theaters on May 30, just in time to kick off the summer blockbuster season.
