Choi Sooyoung is making her Hollywood debut. The Girls' Generation member and acclaimed actress appears alongside Ana de Armas in the upcoming John Wick spin-off film Ballerina, with the first official still revealed on May 31 by Saram Entertainment.
🎬 A major step into Hollywood — Sooyoung plays 'Katla Park'
Set between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Ballerina follows Eve Macaro (played by Ana de Armas), a ballerina-turned-assassin who begins her lethal training under the Ruska Roma.
Sooyoung plays Katla Park, the daughter of a Ruska Roma associate. Her character is rescued and protected by Eve in a high-intensity dance club fight scene, one of the film's emotionally pivotal moments.
🗣️ Sooyoung on her role: "A moment of awakening"
"This is the first time Eve starts to break down—when she truly becomes aware of her identity as an assassin," said Sooyoung. "That's what makes this scene so important in her journey."
She also connected personally to the film's emotional layers. "Even though it's an action movie, the father-daughter dynamic really stood out to me. I love my family deeply, so that aspect made the story even more special."
🎭 Building Katla's world: "It was her birthday"
To emotionally ground her performance, Sooyoung imagined the scene as Katla's birthday—"a moment when she believes only happiness and success lie ahead." This contrast helped her embody Katla's fear, desperation to survive, and inner turmoil.
🌟 On working with Ana de Armas
"She's an incredibly kind person who made me feel like part of the team," Sooyoung shared. "What impressed me most as an actress was how fully immersed she was in her character at all times."
📅 Ballerina premieres June 6 in the U.S., with a Korean release set for August.
