A repeat offender targeting IU has been caught—again. A woman in her 40s who previously left malicious comments about the singer-actress has received another criminal sentence.
⚖️ Court Fines the Same Offender ₩3 Million
On May 29, Judge Lim Jeong-bin of Seoul Central District Court fined Ms. Kim (40) ₩3 million (approx. $2,200 USD) for publicly defaming IU with sexually explicit and derogatory language.
Kim had posted her comment in February 2023 on a portal news article, targeting IU with inappropriate and degrading expressions. She denied all charges, claiming she didn't write the comment and that it didn't meet legal criteria for defamation.
But the court wasn't convinced. The judge pointed out her lack of remorse, the absence of an apology to the victim, and her history of similar offenses.
🚨 A Repeat Offender With a Pattern
In fact, Kim had already been fined ₩3 million in December 2023 for a separate case involving similar online abuse toward IU. This makes it the second time she has been penalized for cyber defamation against the same artist.
The court acknowledged that the latest comment was made prior to her first sentencing, and that she has no prior record of imprisonment, which influenced the decision to limit the punishment to a fine rather than jail time.
Still, Kim has filed an appeal, disputing both this and the earlier 2023 conviction. Both cases are now moving through the appeals process.
👩💻 Netizens React: "The Same Keyboard Warrior?"
Online, fans and netizens are expressing frustration, noting that the same individual continues to harass IU despite legal consequences. Many are calling for stricter punishments and better systems to track repeat cyberbullies.
IU, meanwhile, has remained silent on the case, continuing to focus on her music and acting projects.
