The legendary youth noir comic Beat by Heo Young-man is officially making a comeback—as a 10-episode drama series.
🎬 From Comic to Screen: Reimagining a Generation
ALT Studio announced on June 11 that Beat will be the company's first production. Originally serialized in Young Champ magazine from 1994 to 1995, the story captured the raw emotions of Korean youth—rage, confusion, despair, and growing pains—earning its place as a defining Korean noir.
📚 A Syndicated Sensation with 90s Swagger
With over 1 million copies sold during its original run, Beat sparked a nationwide trend. Items like the Honda CBR600F, Zippo lighters, and Marlboro Reds—featured in the series—became pop culture icons of the era.
🎞️ The 1997 Film That Made Jung Woo-sung a Star
In 1997, Beat was adapted into a film starring Jung Woo-sung and Ko So-young, directed by Kim Sung-soo. It drew over 870,000 viewers and left a cultural mark with legendary lines like "I never had a dream" and "17-on-1 fight."
Now, all eyes are on who will play 'Min,' the next-gen youth icon, in this new adaptation.
🔄 Modern Vibes, Timeless Emotions
ALT Studio shared, "We aim to reinterpret the emotions of youth from that era through a modern lens. It will offer nostalgia for older generations and new emotional resonance for Gen Z and millennials."
📺 Release Coming in 2026
The remake is currently in pre-production and is slated for release in the first half of next year.
