"The Min Yoongi Treatment Center is more than just a medical space." — Broadcaster Kim Il-joong.
The story of SUGA from BTS and his donation began not with a checkbook, but with a desire to volunteer his musical talents.
🎵 SUGA, the Reader & Researcher
In November last year, SUGA visited Dr. Chun Geun-ah, a leading child psychiatrist at Severance Hospital. He had already read Dr. Chun's 500-page textbook "Autism Spectrum Disorder: Brain Science and Clinical Practice."
Dr. Chun recalled, "I'll never forget our first meeting. He had read nearly the entire textbook and asked such deep, insightful questions that I was truly stunned."
📹 The Backstory of the SUGA Project
Severance Hospital released a behind-the-scenes video on June 24 titled "Comfort Through Music: The Story of the Min Yoongi Treatment Center." It detailed how the now-iconic Min Yoongi Center came to be — inspired by SUGA's wish to help children with autism spectrum disorder.
💸 The Power of 5 Billion KRW
SUGA donated ₩5 billion (approx. $3.6M) to establish a dedicated center at Severance Hospital. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on June 23. But more than money, it was his commitment that impressed the staff.
Dr. Chun admitted, "At first, I was worried. But I was drawn to SUGA's sincerity."
🧠 The Birth of MIND Program
Together, they developed MIND, a therapeutic music program that promotes interaction, sensory experience, and individual expression. Over seven months, SUGA never missed a session — often arriving earlier than staff and attending prep meetings with therapists.
"He really tried to match the children's rhythm, breathing, and eye level," Dr. Chun shared. "His joyful smile while engaging with the kids is unforgettable."
🎶 Music as a Bridge
SUGA's music created emotional connections. His vocals and instrumentals gave non-verbal children a new way to communicate and express themselves. It was this genuine empathy that resonated deeply with the therapy team.
What made the biggest difference? His donation.
SUGA realized the importance of a structured, permanent space for therapy — and made it a reality.
📈 Looking Ahead: Expanding Impact
The Min Yoongi Treatment Center aims to become a platform that goes beyond music — incorporating art, physical activity, and cultural education to help create art-based career paths for children.
SUGA has promised continued support. "I want to keep helping. We plan to expand and enhance the center further."
As a closing note, he shared,
"This fall, when the leaves are beautiful, we're planning a music camp. Please continue to show your warm support."
