Actor Yoo Ah-in (real name Uhm Hong-sik, 39) has officially received a suspended prison sentence from South Korea's Supreme Court.
On July 3, the Supreme Court's First Division (presided by Chief Justice Ma Yong-joo) upheld the lower court's ruling, sentencing Yoo to 1 year in prison with 2 years of probation and a ₩2 million (approx. $1,450) fine for violations of the Narcotics Control Act involving psychotropic drugs and marijuana use.
The court also upheld the previous not-guilty ruling for charges of evidence tampering and coercion. Meanwhile, a co-defendant, Mr. Choi (34), who was tried alongside Yoo for marijuana use, also received a final sentence of 8 months in prison with 2 years of probation.
Yoo Ah-in was indicted for habitually using medical-grade Propofol under the guise of cosmetic procedures 181 times between September 2020 and March 2022 at hospitals in Seoul.
He was also found guilty of illegally obtaining more than 1,100 sleeping pills (two types) under someone else's name across 45 instances between May 2021 and August 2022. Additionally, Yoo was charged with smoking marijuana in the U.S. last year and encouraging others to use it.
Yoo was taken into custody after his first trial in September 2023, which sentenced him to one year in prison. In February 2024, however, the appeals court reduced the sentence to one year in prison with two years of probation, leading to his release after approximately five months in detention.
The appellate court stated, "The defendant appears to have committed the crime due to prolonged suffering from sleep disorders and depression. He now seems to have overcome much of his drug dependency and has vowed not to reoffend."
