Lee Byung-hun Lends His Voice to 'K-pop Demon Hunters'—"English Dubbing Was Tough, But Worth It"

Lee Byung-hun commands the screen—this time, with just his voice. The veteran actor brings a chilling gravitas to Netflix's latest animated global hit, K-pop Demon Hunters.

🎙️ The Voice of the Dark King

In the film, Lee voices Gwima, the king of ancient demons who absorbs human souls and seeks to conquer the world. Despite his brief appearance, his deep, commanding tone adds tension and presence. Gwima even takes over the mind of Lion Boyz member Jinwoo, played by Ahn Hyo-seop.

Lee said, "While I was in the U.S., I met with Sony Pictures. I found the concept fascinating even during the early planning stages."

He's also the only cast member who performed in both English and Korean dubs. "Originally, I was only set to do the English version, but later I also took on the Korean dub," he explained.

🌍 The Challenge of English Dubbing

Lee shared that English dubbing wasn't easy. "It required understanding the emotions, tone, and cultural nuances. While the Korean dubbing took just one day, I had to divide the English version across three sessions to polish it," he said.

One moment that stood out to him was a scene where Gwima awkwardly mimics Jinwoo singing. "I kept thinking about how to act out that moment. It was tricky but memorable."

Lee added, "Gwima is meant to be this terrifying king of darkness, but there's a moment when he feels clumsy and even endearing. I liked that contrast."

🔥 A Global Hit, A Proud Moment

K-pop Demon Hunters has exploded globally. Within just one day of its release, it hit No.1 in 22 countries including the U.S., U.K., and Australia. It has remained Netflix's global No.1 in film for 12 consecutive days.

"I was surprised to see a Korean story and concept receive so much love. It made me proud to be part of it," Lee shared.

🎬 Director's Praise

Director Maggie Kang praised Lee, calling his participation "an honor." She added, "Working with Lee Byung-hun was one of the most exciting and meaningful parts of making this film."

She recalled, "Even from the early stages, he asked thoughtful questions and showed deep interest in the creative direction. He was all in."
