Ryu Seung-ryong is trading in superpowers for shameless greed—and he's leading a ragtag crew into murky waters.
🎬 A Treasure Hunt Fueled by Ambition
Disney+ unveiled its new Korean original series FINE: The Bumpkins with a press conference held at Conrad Seoul on July 8. Set in the 1970s, the 11-episode drama follows a group of unlikely treasure hunters from all over Korea, gathering near the seas of Sinan to chase after sunken relics—and their own desires.
💥 From Hero to Hustler
Ryu Seung-ryong, who wowed audiences as a quiet superdad in Moving, now transforms into Oh Gwan-seok—a gritty, survival-driven father who'll do anything for his family, including diving headfirst into a dangerous underwater heist.
"This is a story about people who deceive and get deceived in pursuit of their goals," Ryu said. "It's about the emptiness that remains, no matter how much you try to fill it."
🎭 All-Star Cast Brings Raw Energy
The series boasts a powerhouse ensemble:
- Lim Soo-jung plays Yang Jung-sook, a cold-hearted investor hiding her own ambitions.
- Yang Se-jong joins as Oh Hee-dong, Ryu's right-hand man in the treasure quest.
- Kim Eui-sung stars as a shady professor with a nose for money.
- Lee Dong-hwi is a cocky Mokpo cop who abuses his power.
- Jung Yunho of TVXQ transforms into a flashy gangster named Beol-gu.
Director Kang Yoon-sung (The Outlaws, Casino) helms the project and praised the cast, saying, "This was the first time I shaped characters after observing the actors closely. Their input made everything richer."
⛴ Immersive 1970s Vibes + Dialect Details
Shot in Mokpo, the drama fully recreates the look and feel of 1970s Korea—from set design to fashion. Lim Soo-jung noted, "From hair and makeup to jewelry, every detail felt era-specific. I became one with the character." Jung Yunho, who trained with taxi drivers to perfect the regional dialect, added, "I really wanted to get the tone right."
📺 A Webtoon Adaptation With Depth
FINE: The Bumpkins is based on the webtoon by Yoon Tae-ho (Misaeng). The show drops its first three episodes on July 16, followed by two new episodes every Wednesday.
