The trial for the two individuals accused of blackmailing football star Son Heung-min (33) officially kicked off. At the first hearing, the female defendant, Ms. Yang (29), denied the charges, while the male defendant, Mr. Yong (41), admitted guilt.
On July 17, the Seoul Central District Court's Criminal Division 20 held the first hearing. Ms. Yang is being tried for blackmail and attempted blackmail, while Mr. Yong faces charges of attempted blackmail.
🧑⚖️ Ms. Yang Denies Involvement
When asked by the judge if she acknowledged either charge, Yang replied, "I do not admit to the charges. I intend to dispute them in court."
Her legal representative further clarified:
- She completely denies the second blackmail attempt (carried out with Mr. Yong).
- As for the first incident, she may consider partial admission, pending further review.
The defense also mentioned that a shaman known as "Mr. C" is under investigation, and suggested that this case might be merged with that matter. A clearer stance will be presented at the next hearing.
👨💼 Mr. Yong Admits Guilt
Mr. Yong admitted to conspiring with Ms. Yang to extort money from Son Heung-min.
The court decided to separate the trial procedures for the two, though sentencing will be delivered simultaneously.
📌 Background of the Blackmail Plot
- In June 2023, Ms. Yang sent Son an ultrasound image, demanding ₩300 million (~$215,000) to "protect his career."
- Originally, she tried to claim the pregnancy from a different man. When that failed, she shifted the blame to Son.
- In early 2025, Mr. Yong (then her boyfriend) attempted a second blackmail, demanding ₩70 million (~$50,000) while threatening to reveal a false abortion story. This attempt failed.
Prosecutors believe the two collaborated, with Yang providing the materials and Yong executing the threats. Both were arrested and detained in May.
📅 Next Court Date: August 28, 5 PM KST
- Son Heung-min's side will present witness testimony.
- Ms. Yang's official position will also be re-examined.
