WOODZ Completes Military Service: "Grateful for the Love—I'll Repay It" (Full Q&A)

WOODZ (Cho Seung-youn) has officially wrapped up his military service.

On July 21, the artist was discharged after completing his 18-month term as a member of the Army Band at the Korea Military Academy. He enlisted as an active-duty soldier in January last year.

Through his agency EDAM Entertainment, WOODZ shared, "I can't believe my service is already over—it feels surreal. Right now, I'm just genuinely happy."

🎶 A Surprise Comeback While in Uniform

While serving, WOODZ saw an unexpected surge in popularity thanks to his 2023 release Drowning. Though the song initially flew under the radar, it made a comeback in October when WOODZ performed it in uniform on Immortal Songs for Korea's Armed Forces Day. The performance went viral, catapulting the track to No.1 on streaming platforms and music shows.

Reflecting on that moment, he said, "It made me incredibly happy. I'll keep working hard to live up to the support I've received."

WOODZ is set to return to full activity immediately. He'll perform at Summer Sonic 2025 in Japan next month, followed by appearances at Let's Rock Festival and Sound Planet Festival. He also hinted that a new album is on the way, with plans to further explore the rock genre and create music that reflects his personal voice and themes.

🗣️ WOODZ's Post-Discharge Q&A

Q. Congrats on your discharge! How do you feel?

When I first enlisted, I was nervous and thought time would drag. But 18 months flew by—I can't believe I'm done. I'm genuinely happy right now.

Q. What did your time in the military mean to you?

It was unforgettable. Personally, it was a time of growth. Drowning gained a lot of attention during my service, and I had the chance to reflect on what I want to do going forward in a more peaceful, structured environment.

Q. You were even selected as a "special warrior." What was the most memorable moment of your service?

My first public event after boot camp—it was a recruitment event at Sejong University. I got to see fans for the first time in a while, and it felt so strange and special to meet people who still loved the artist side of me.

Q. Did military life change you musically or personally?

Definitely. I worked with a lot of musicians—those who played classical instruments, drums, guitar, bass. We had deep conversations about music. I think I've become more detailed and expressive in my songwriting.

Q. What was it like to experience a "reverse charting" hit with Drowning during your service?

It was hard to fully grasp what was happening while I was still in the military. I only realized it when fellow soldiers or officers would ask for autographs. Reading fan comments online made me feel deeply grateful and motivated.

Q. The song's success wasn't a fluke—it's still topping charts nine months later.

I never worked with rankings in mind, so I didn't think much about it at first. But it made me incredibly happy. I'll keep focusing on making meaningful music, and I'll work hard to live up to these special moments.

Q. Any fan comments that stood out to you?

Someone said, "Since he's in the military, Drowning is paddling on its own—fully self-driving." That one really made me laugh.

Q. What's the first thing you want to do now that you're discharged?

I'm focused on my core passion: music. I'm planning albums, concerts, and all things music-related.

Q. Can you share any hints about your next album?

I'll definitely be doing more rock—because I love it—but I also want to create songs that fit the emotions and stories I want to express. I want to try different genres and make music that's convincing and powerful.

Q. A message to fans who've waited so long?

MUZ, I'm finally back. Your support helped me through some tough times. I've always known this, but I realized even more in the army how much your love means to me. I'll keep my humility and always aim to be the kind of artist you can proudly say you stan. I know I'm not someone who deserves love by default—so I treasure every bit of support. I won't rush. I'll show you step by step how grateful I am. I love you.

Q. Any final thoughts?

Thank you to everyone who noticed me. The love I received while serving was overwhelming in the best way. I'll keep preparing great things and hope you enjoy the ride. Your support created a miracle for me, and I hope I can give back by adding happiness to your lives.

And to everyone I served with—thank you. To the soldiers who continue to serve in this heat, I truly respect and appreciate you.
