Netflix is back with a gritty, socially charged thriller—and this time, it's asking: What would we do if guns landed in our hands?
🔫 Illegal Guns Flood Korea—And So Begins the Chaos
Trigger, set to drop on July 25, dives into a world where mysterious illegal firearms are suddenly delivered across South Korea. Panic ensues. Chaos erupts. And two men—played by Kim Nam-gil and Kim Young-kwang—pick up guns, each for wildly different reasons.
At the press conference held at Hotel Naru Seoul on July 22, Kim Nam-gil said, "Trigger is a story that makes us question what kind of choice we'd make if we held a gun. It's a story about empathy, self-restraint, and what it means to protect others."
🎯 A Story Born from a Dark Thought
Director Kwon Oh-seung revealed the concept came from a simple yet disturbing thought: "What if I had a gun?" He shared, "When life feels suffocating, people fantasize. That dangerous fantasy is where this story begins."
He continued, "With so many incidents in Korea recently, I wondered what would happen if someone spread guns with malicious intent. How would society react?"
👤 Kim Nam-gil as Lee Do, the Quiet Force
Kim Nam-gil plays Lee Do, a former military sniper now working as a police officer. Burdened by his past, he returns to the gun—not out of violence, but necessity.
"Lee Do doesn't lead the story," Kim explained. "Instead, he follows the stories of others. He's more of an observer than a typical hero."
He added, "I wanted to portray a man who constantly questions whether picking up a gun is the right choice. I focused on protective action, not aggression."
🕶️ Kim Young-kwang as Moon Baek, the Mysterious Maverick
Kim Young-kwang takes on the role of Moon Baek, a mysterious figure who works with Lee Do. He's carefree yet suspicious—charming but unpredictable.
"This was unlike any character I've played," said Kim. "He constantly questions others, and that energy drew me in."
Though Kim is introverted in real life, he enjoyed tapping into an extroverted character: "At first, it was overwhelming. But once I leaned into it, I had fun. Watching Moon Baek evolve over the series is going to be exciting."
🔍 Their Chemistry? Unmatched
Lee Do and Moon Baek meet on a crime scene. When asked who he is, Moon Baek coolly replies, "I'm here to pick up a package." It's the beginning of a strange but compelling partnership.
"Before working with him, I only saw Kim Young-kwang as a romance actor," Kim Nam-gil said with a laugh. "But he's got serious potential in thrillers."
Kim Young-kwang returned the praise: "Nam-gil hyung is a true leader. I trusted him completely, and he caught me every time."
⚠️ Real-Life Gun Violence Casts a Shadow
On July 20, a tragic real-life gun incident occurred in Incheon, where a man used a homemade firearm to kill his own son. With this in mind, Netflix canceled a planned fan livestream out of respect.
Director Kwon responded solemnly, "It's a heartbreaking event. Trigger does not glorify guns. It shows what not to do—offering a message about consequences and responsibility."
🗓️ Mark Your Calendar
Trigger is a 10-part series, streaming exclusively on Netflix starting July 25. With a star-studded cast, moral dilemmas, and socially resonant themes, it's poised to start important conversations—and maybe change how we see power, violence, and choice.
