Yoon Kye-sang Returns to SBS After 18 Years—With Rugby and Laughs in 'Try'

Get ready to laugh and cheer—Yoon Kye-sang is back, and this time he's playing an eccentric rugby coach in SBS's brand-new sports drama Try.

🏉 A Quirky Coach With a Heart

At the press conference held at SBS Mokdong, Yoon said, "I tried to bring out the playful side of myself that people might remember from variety shows. I didn't want it to feel forced."

In Try, Yoon stars as Joo Ga-ram, a former star rugby player whose career fell apart after a doping scandal. He's now back as the head coach of Hanyang Sports High School's struggling rugby team—known for finishing dead last.

😂 Comedy, Growth, and Tackles
Try is a coming-of-age sports comedy that tells the story of underdogs chasing a championship at the National Sports Festival. It follows in the footsteps of SBS hits like Stove League and Racket Boys, but it's the first Korean drama to spotlight rugby.

Director Jang Young-seong noted, "Rugby is a high-impact, fast-paced sport. That raw energy fits perfectly with our story."

🎭 Yoon's First-Ever Sports Drama

Yoon admitted he felt pressure taking on a sports-centered role for the first time—especially with an unfamiliar sport like rugby. "Joo Ga-ram is someone who helps others grow. I thought a lot about how to keep the role fun and engaging," he said.

Rather than building a new persona, he pulled from within. "I didn't try to create a new character—I amplified parts of myself," he explained. "The director encouraged a lot of improv, so I had fun just being me."

📚 A New Love for Rugby

He also did his homework. "I started watching rugby matches on YouTube. The more I learned, the more I got hooked. It's such a passionate, heart-pounding sport."

🤼 Strong Team Chemistry

Kim Yo-han plays Yoon Sung-jun, the rugby team captain. "Our characters are complete opposites," he said. "When Yoon would throw out a line, I just reacted naturally in the moment."

To play the role convincingly, Kim trained with real rugby players three months before filming. "The physical training was intense—but really fun," he added.

🎯 Rom-Com Rivalry?

Im Se-mi joins the cast as Bae Ji, Ga-ram's ex-girlfriend and now a sharp-tongued rival. She coaches the school's shooting team. "I've been a fan of Yoon Kye-sang for a long time," she shared. "But on set, we were always bickering, fighting, and yelling—right up until the director yelled 'Cut,' and we'd both burst out laughing."

📺 SBS Eyes a Comeback

Following the low ratings of SBS's last Friday-Saturday drama Our Movie, which ended at 4.1%, hopes are high that Try could turn things around.

Director Jang said, "Rather than trying to chase big trends, we focused on avoiding cliché and building authentic, emotional moments with the cast. We're hoping our sincerity comes through."

Yoon Kye-sang added confidently, "The script is honestly so fun. The editing style and story details really match today's audience. I think this one's going to do well."

Try premieres on July 25 at 9:50 PM KST on SBS.
