A member of 'Team Bunnies' was referred to the prosecution for violating the Donation Act. The group, a prominent fandom of NewJeans, raised funds to take action against malicious commenters.
The Jongam Police Station in Seoul recently sent a person identified as A to the Seoul Northern District Prosecutors' Office. A is suspected of violating the Donation Act.
On October 21 last year, Team Bunnies raised money under the pretext of reporting malicious comments about NewJeans. They publicly shared a donation account on social media and collected 51.22 million won in just eight hours.
According to Article 4 of the Donation Act, fundraising over 10 million won must be registered with the relevant authorities. Failure to register can result in up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million won.
A netizen reported Team Bunnies' fundraising to the National Police Agency, judging it to be illegal. He explained, "After checking with the Seoul city government, it was confirmed to be unregistered and thus illegal fundraising."
Team Bunnies is a source of gratitude for Min Hee-jin. In fact, at a Hyundai Card event last September, Min Hee-jin expressed her thanks, saying, "Team Bunnies appeared to me like Hong Gil-dong."
"I have never seen their faces or known their ages, but I am truly grateful. Where did these people suddenly come from? They appeared to me like Hong Gil-dong. I really want to bow to them." (Min Hee-jin)
However, Team Bunnies' actions have become controversial even among NewJeans' official fandom, Bunnyz. Some Bunnyz members clarified to HYBE that Team Bunnies do not represent the entire fandom's opinion.
For example, Team Bunnies was involved in the May 'Indomie' pop-up store event, conducting an online survey for purchasing Indomie products modeled by NewJeans. They collected personal information such as names, phone numbers, and email addresses, which raised concerns.
Team Bunnies describes themselves as a group of experts from various fields supporting NewJeans. They say the team consists of Bunnyz active in law, media, finance, culture, and the arts.
They have never appeared publicly. As Min Hee-jin put it, they move like Hong Gil-dong. After NewJeans lost the injunction to protect their agency status and prevent ad contracts, Team Bunnies met directly with the members' parents and the law firm Sejong.
