British rock band Oasis is under fire for featuring imagery resembling the Rising Sun flag in a recent video.
On August 8, Oasis uploaded a 30-second clip on social media with the caption, "Check out the new visuals for Morning Glory." The video included collage-style images alongside their 1995 hit, some of which appeared to depict the Rising Sun flag multiple times.
The Rising Sun flag was used by the Japanese military during its aggressive wars in Asia and is considered a symbol of Japanese militarism. For countries once invaded by Japan, it evokes deep historical pain.
Korean and Chinese netizens reacted with outrage, commenting, "This is offensive," and "Including the Rising Sun flag in a music video is like adding a Nazi symbol."
The controversy comes just ahead of Oasis's first Korea concert in 16 years. The band is set to hold the OASIS LIVE-25 TOUR in Seoul this October.
Past accusations of racism against Liam Gallagher have also resurfaced. Last month, Liam posted the word "ching chong" on social media — a derogatory term for East Asians. He later apologized, saying, "It wasn't intentional. I'm sorry if I offended anyone. I love you all."
Oasis, regarded as Britpop legends, disbanded in 2009 due to tensions between brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher but announced their reunion last year. They are currently on a world tour.
