IVE Denies Anti-Japan Allegations Over Burning Paper Crane Scene
by. ymchoi

IVE has firmly denied claims that their new music video contains anti-Japan elements, clarifying that the controversial scene was purely a creative choice. The dispute began when some Japanese netizens criticized a teaser showing member Rei burning a paper crane, noting that it was released one day before the anniversary of the Nagasaki atomic bombing on August 9.

Director Clarifies Artistic Intent

OUI, the music video director, addressed the criticism on August 13 through social media. He explained that the concept aimed to portray an "evil cupid" disrupting lovers' romance, with the paper crane symbolizing a medium of love. "There was absolutely no other meaning behind the burning paper crane," he emphasized.

Concept: From Cupid to "Evil Cupid"

On August 8, IVE unveiled the trailer for their 4th mini album IVE SECRET, flipping the bright and lovable cupid image into a cold and mischievous "evil cupid" concept. In the teaser, members appear in cupid attire while burning paper cranes, breaking winged objects, and shooting at a unicorn doll.

Some Japanese viewers interpreted these scenes as anti-Japan imagery, especially given the release date and Rei's Japanese nationality. They also pointed to Rei wearing an "I'm Sorry" shirt as a possible reference to Japan's wartime history.

Misinterpretation of Symbols

However, "I'm Sorry" is simply the name of a fashion brand founded by Canadian photographer Petra Collins, previously worn by artists such as Jeon Somi, Ella from Miyao, and Chuu. Korean netizens dismissed the controversy, noting that in Korea, paper cranes often symbolize love, not historical trauma.

Album Overview

IVE SECRET presents a multi-layered storyline that contrasts glamorous expressions with hidden emotions. The six-track album includes the title track XOXZ (with lyrics by Jang Wonyoung), Midnight Kiss (co-written by Liz), Wild Bird, Dear, My Feelings, Gotcha, and Beep. The album will be released on August 25 at 6 PM on major streaming platforms.
