Former UN member Choi Jung-won is under investigation for violating the Stalking Punishment Act and charges of special threats.
According to the Jungbu Police Station in Seoul, Choi was booked on August 16 for stalking after allegedly going to the home of a woman who had recently ended their relationship, carrying a weapon and threatening her.
Dispatch reported that Choi is also facing charges for special threats. He reportedly brandished a kitchen knife toward his ex-partner and sent threatening calls and messages.
Recognizing the severity of the situation, police issued an emergency protective order to prevent further stalking and ensure the victim's safety. Seoul Central District Court also approved a temporary injunction, stating, "The matter is urgent, and the measure is necessary to prevent continued stalking."
Emergency protective measures and temporary injunctions restrict the perpetrator from approaching within 100 meters of the victim and prohibit contact via electronic communications. Violations can result in imprisonment of up to one year or fines up to 10 million KRW.
Police are currently investigating Choi Jung-won to determine the circumstances and details of the alleged offenses.
