"Jung Seung-je, Idol of Students"… 'Give Me a Meal' Brings Warmth to Daechi-dong
by. ymchoi

JTBC's variety show "Give Me a Meal" aired its 7th episode on August 19, sending encouragement to students preparing for Korea's national college entrance exam (CSAT), now just 100 days away. Star instructor Jung Seung-je, often called the "idol of students," appeared alongside celebrity chef Lee Mi-young in the Daechi-dong neighborhood, a district famous for its intense academic culture.

Encouragement for Exam Takers

Cast members Kim Hee-sun and Tak Jae-hoon joined the visit, sharing empathy as parents. Kim recalled her own experiences as a "Daechi mom," saying she once drove her daughter to academy classes up to 16 times a day. Tak emphasized the stress students face as exams approach and suggested visiting households with test takers to deliver encouragement.

The team explored the academy district, observed study methods, and shared motivational advice with students. Jung Seung-je counseled teens on staying focused, encouraging them to study "as if 100 days were 200" and to keep their spirits high. His presence drew excitement from students and parents, reflecting his reputation as a top instructor.

A Successful Meal and Shared Warmth

The cast also carried out the show's signature mission of sharing a home-cooked meal. Chef Lee prepared handmade short rib patties and rolled omelets, while Jung cooked kimchi fried rice. Students happily ate multiple servings, enjoying the heartfelt dishes.

Parents also opened up about the pressures of education, with one father lamenting that skipping advanced learning was criticized as a parenting failure. Jung sympathized, stressing that children who are allowed to play and relax often perform better. Kim Hee-sun agreed, creating a moment of warmth and understanding.

The episode resonated with both students and adults, blending humor, comfort, and sincere encouragement. "Give Me a Meal," which aims to restore neighborly bonds through shared dining, airs every Tuesday at 8:50 p.m. on JTBC.
