The upcoming film No Choice (directed by Park Chan-wook) has officially secured a 15+ rating, raising hopes it could become the next Korean box office sensation.
Rating Details and Evaluation
The Korea Media Rating Board (KMRB) announced on August 20 that No Choice was classified as suitable for viewers aged 15 and older. The film underwent evaluation across seven categories: violence, sexuality, themes, drugs, dialogue, and imitation risk were rated 15+, while horror was rated 12+.
The committee explained that although the film portrays moral collapse involving criminal methods, it does not glorify crime or violence. Sexual language and brief sex scenes were noted but not considered excessive, while violent scenes were judged to have a dark comedy exaggeration. Profanity and slang were also deemed acceptable within social norms.
Plot and Expectations
No Choice follows the story of a man who, after being laid off, dives headfirst into a brutal re-employment battle. Early predictions suggested it might receive an adults-only rating, but the 15+ classification broadens its potential audience to include teenagers, increasing box office prospects.
International Spotlight
The film is set for its world premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 30 (KST). With its expanded rating and international debut, anticipation is growing over whether Park Chan-wook's new work will move beyond "Cannes Park" fame to earn the title of a "ten-million-audience Park."
