Veteran comedian Jun Yoo-sung (76) has decided not to participate in the Busan International Comedy Festival (BICF) due to health issues.
Cancellation Linked to Pneumothorax Surgery
According to BICF organizers, Jun was originally scheduled to appear at the side event Comedy Book Concert on September 6 in Busan but withdrew due to poor condition. While there remains a possibility of his attendance depending on his recovery, his performance is confirmed to be canceled. The lineup has been adjusted to feature comedians Lee Hong-ryeol and Jung Sun-hee instead.
Jun's representatives explained that he underwent surgery for pneumothorax in June and is still in the process of recovery, leading to adjustments in his schedule.
Longstanding Health Concerns
The comedian's health has been a source of public concern in recent years. He suffered from acute pneumonia, arrhythmia, and COVID-19 last year, losing around 16 kilograms and appearing visibly frail.
Role in BICF and Comedy Legacy
As the honorary chairman of BICF, Jun has contributed significantly to the festival, including curating a comedy film event last year that explored the past, present, and future of Korean comedy films.
Jun began his career in 1969 as a writer for TBC's Show Show Show. In 2019, he celebrated his 50th anniversary in the industry with a nationwide tour, captivating audiences with his signature wit.
The Busan International Comedy Festival will open on August 29 and run through September 7 across venues in Busan.
