The mastermind of a hacking organization, Jeon Mo (34), accused of using the identities of BTS member Jungkook and major corporate executives, has admitted to part of the allegations.
At a regular press briefing on August 25, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency stated, "The suspect has partially confessed to some charges while denying others. We will continue a thorough investigation based on the evidence collected so far."
Jeon, a Chinese national, is accused of hacking domestic telecom websites and other platforms from August 2023 to January last year to steal assets, violating the Information and Communications Network Act.
Jungkook was among the victims. In January last year, while serving in the military, his identity was exploited. Jeon reportedly opened a securities account under Jungkook's name without permission and sold about 100 million KRW worth of Jungkook's stocks to a third party. Jungkook reclaimed the funds through a civil lawsuit in March.
Jeon is also suspected of misusing the names of top 30-ranked corporate heads and venture company CEOs. He allegedly opened unauthorized mobile accounts under victims' names and transferred funds from financial accounts and other assets.
Jeon was extradited from Thailand to South Korea on August 22 and was detained on August 24. So far, the total damage is estimated at approximately 38 billion KRW. Police confirmed, "16 members of the group have been apprehended, and 2 have been formally arrested."
The police plan to formally transfer Jeon to the prosecution this week and will begin detailed investigations of the victims to accurately determine the extent of the damages.
