Actress Youn Yuh-jung will make her return to domestic screens next month with the Hollywood film Wedding Banquet.
Unpredictable Comedy with a K-Grandma Twist
Universal Pictures announced that Wedding Banquet (directed by Andrew Ahn) will premiere in South Korea on September 24. The film is a comedy centered on a fake wedding planned by same-sex couples, complicated by the arrival of a sharp-witted Korean grandmother.
The teaser poster shows the protagonist in a traditional wedding hanbok, with a painted dot on her forehead, while an illustration at the bottom depicts same-sex couples holding hands. The tagline, "Two couples, one wedding?" hints at the humorous chaos to come.
Youn Yuh-jung's Role and Cultural Context
Youn Yuh-jung plays Ja-young, the skeptical grandmother, echoing her acclaimed performance in Minari. The story explores generational and cultural clashes, combining traditional Korean elements with contemporary humor.
Wedding Banquet is a remake of the 1993 film of the same name, which won the Golden Bear at the 43rd Berlin International Film Festival. Director Andrew Ahn, of Korean descent, updated the original's charm while weaving modern sensibilities and Korean cultural nuances throughout the story.
The film will first be showcased at the 30th Busan International Film Festival in the "World Cinema" section from September 17–26, ahead of its exclusive theatrical release at Lotte Cinema on September 24.
