by. ymchoi

Jun Ji-hyun and Kang Dong-won reunite on screen in the upcoming Disney+ series Polaris, blending espionage thrills with an adult romance.

A Long-Awaited Collaboration

The pairing of Jun Ji-hyun and Kang Dong-won immediately captured attention. Both actors expressed excitement about working together, with Jun noting, "I wanted to film with Kang Dong-won before it was too late," and Kang adding, "I'm returning to drama after 21 years because of Jun Ji-hyun." Their on-screen chemistry promises a mature, nuanced love story set against high-stakes intrigue.

Polaris, adapted from a Swedish drama, follows UN diplomat Moon Joo (Jun Ji-hyun) as she investigates a presidential assassination attempt. Special operative San-ho (Kang Dong-won) assists her, uncovering a vast conspiracy threatening the Korean Peninsula. Jun's character balances quiet composure with bold decisiveness, navigating complex events while revealing hidden vulnerabilities. Kang's San-ho is a highly skilled operative whose mysterious background adds tension and depth, with his actions increasingly driven by his desire to protect Moon Joo.

Emphasis on Adult Romance and Action

Though framed as a spy thriller, the series focuses on mature romantic dynamics. Jun Ji-hyun described it as her first "adult romance," capturing the subtle pull between two experienced individuals. Kang Dong-won highlighted the difference from youthful romances, noting the chemistry of two people who already understand life's complexities.

The series also incorporates evolving action sequences, with Kang explaining that the action shifts from cold, professional moves to emotionally charged protection of Moon Joo as the story progresses.

Veteran Ensemble Enhances the Story

Seasoned actors Kim Hae-sook, Lee Mi-sook, Oh Jung-se, Yoo Jae-myung, and Park Hae-joon join the cast, enriching the series' political and espionage narrative. The ensemble adds weight and depth, complementing the leads' dynamic performances.

Polaris will premiere its first three episodes on September 10, with two new episodes released weekly starting September 17, offering viewers a blend of suspense, romance, and compelling performances.
