Actor Hwang Jung-min is making a theatrical comeback, trading his usual on-screen charisma for dual roles as a bumbling father and affectionate nanny, promising laughter and heartwarming moments.
On September 2, the production team of Mrs. Doubtfire held a press conference at Ewha Womans University Samsung Hall in Seoul, attended by Hwang Jung-min, Jung Sung-hwa, Jung Sang-hoon, LinA, Lee Ji-hoon, Kim Da-hyun, Kim Tae-hee, and Seol Ga-eun.
The musical adapts the iconic film directed by Chris Columbus, telling the story of a divorced family brought closer through the whimsical character of Doubtfire. Hwang plays Daniel, a well-meaning but clumsy father, who, after divorcing his wife Miranda, disguises himself as the nanny Doubtfire to reconnect with his children.
Hwang returns to musicals after nearly a decade. He cited the story's focus on family love as a key reason for choosing the role, adding that both Daniel and Doubtfire are compelling and "fascinating" characters.
The production features triple casting for the main roles, including Jung Sung-hwa and Jung Sang-hoon, all of whom noted the demanding nature of balancing complex character work with comedic timing. Hwang highlighted the thrill of Daniel's double life, especially humorous moments where his appearance contrasts with his disguised voice.
Other cast members include Park Hye-na and LinA as Miranda, Kim Tae-hee and Seol Ga-eun as eldest daughter Lydia, and Lee Ji-hoon and Kim Da-hyun as Daniel's rival Stuart.
Mrs. Doubtfire will open at Charlotte Theatre on September 27.
