Park Chan-wook's film 'No Choice' is set to join the Academy Awards race following its success at Venice.
Korean Entry for Best International Feature
The Korean Film Council announced on September 2 that 'No Choice' has been selected as South Korea's official submission for the Best International Feature category at the 2026 Academy Awards.
Judges highlighted the film's polished craftsmanship, its exploration of the timely theme of layoffs, and strong performances from the cast as key competitive factors.
Black Comedy with Global Appeal
The council noted that the protagonist's anti-social behavior, driven by the desire to protect his home, creates a darkly humorous yet convincing narrative. They described the film's ironic tragedy—where characters take extreme measures to safeguard what they love—as "laughably painful," predicting it will resonate with audiences worldwide.
Park Chan-wook's Academy Journey
Director Park previously submitted 'Decision to Leave' (2022) to the Academy but did not secure a nomination. Industry outlets like IndieWire suggest that 'No Choice' could finally earn Park an Oscar nod, emphasizing that the film maintains his provocative style while avoiding alienating Academy voters with excessive brutality.
Plot and Reception
'No Choice' follows office worker Mansu (played by Lee Byung-hun), who, after being laid off, prepares for reemployment to protect his wife (Son Ye-jin) and two children. The film opens on September 24.
The movie already impressed critics at the Venice Film Festival, receiving a standing ovation lasting approximately eight and a half minutes. It marks the first Korean entry in 13 years to compete for the Golden Lion.
