Netflix's animated film K-pop Demon Hunters (directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Apelhanz) has set a new global viewing record.
According to Netflix's tracking platform, ToDoom, the film reached a cumulative 266 million views (calculated by dividing total watch time by the runtime) as of September 3 (KST), surpassing all previous Netflix content in both movies and series categories. This beats Squid Game 1 (265.2 million) and Wednesday 1 (252.1 million).
The surge in viewers has been particularly notable in the past week, adding 30.1 million views alone. The film has reached number one in 35 countries and regions.
The recent addition of a "sing-along" version, which allows audiences to sing along with the characters, is believed to have contributed to its popularity. Netflix releases weekly viewership data based on cumulative hours over a 91-day period following each premiere. K-pop Demon Hunters debuted in June, leaving about 25 days remaining for this reporting cycle.
The film centers on K-pop idols in an animated fantasy setting. It follows girl group members who double as exorcists, called the HuntRix, as they battle the male idol group, the Lion Boys.
