A man who stole items from comedian Park Na-rae's home has been sentenced to prison, despite returning the stolen goods, due to prior convictions and calls for strict punishment.
The Seoul Western District Court, Criminal Division 1 (Presiding Judge Park Ji-won), held the sentencing hearing on September 3 for Jeong, 37, who faced charges of theft and nighttime residential intrusion. He was sentenced to two years in prison.
The court cited Jeong's prior criminal record and the fact that he committed the crime during a suspended sentence period. The stolen items were high-value, and the victim requested strict punishment.
However, the court noted mitigating factors: Jeong admitted to the charges, voluntarily surrendered to Yongsan Police Station on April 11, and returned the stolen items to the victim.
The incident occurred on April 4 when Jeong unlawfully entered Park Na-rae's residence in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, stealing luxury goods valued at approximately 68 million KRW, including designer handbags and five rings. Park reported the theft to police on April 7.
During the investigation, Jeong claimed he did not know the residence belonged to Park Na-rae. Some stolen items were sold to individuals identified as A and B, who were fined 2 million KRW and 3 million KRW, respectively.
Authorities also confirmed that Jeong committed a similar crime earlier this year in late March at another residence in Yongsan-gu, leading to his arrest.
