Actor Kwak Do-won will no longer participate in the theatrical production A Streetcar Named Desire.
The theater company Toe Maru explained, "The play is being staged at the National Theater, which made public opinion a significant consideration."
Kwak was previously investigated in September 2022 for violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving) and received a fine of approximately 10 million KRW, leading to a temporary halt in his activities.
He had been preparing to return to the stage after three years, originally set to perform the role of Stanley solo. However, he stepped down from the production a month before its opening.
Toe Maru announced on September 3 via the National Theater website that casting changes were due to production circumstances, introducing replacements including Lee Se-chang and Kang Eun-tak.
The play, based on Tennessee Williams' novel, explores human desire, frustration, hope, and the tension between reality and aspiration.
A Streetcar Named Desire will be performed at the Daloreum Theater of the National Theater from October 9 to 10.
