Singer Jeong Dong-won is under prosecution for unlicensed driving while also having been the target of blackmail by acquaintances demanding 200 million KRW.
The Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office is currently investigating Jeong on charges of violating traffic laws. Authorities secured a video of him practicing driving on a mountain road in Hadong, South Gyeongsang Province, in 2023. The footage was found on his personal phone, which was later accessed by acquaintances who attempted to extort money in exchange for silence.
Jeong refused to comply with the demand and instead reported the blackmailers to the police. The suspects have since been arrested and are now standing trial.
Official Statement and Apology
His agency, Showplay Entertainment, issued a public apology on September 11:
"We sincerely apologize for the recent incident involving our artist Jeong Dong-won. He admits his mistake of practicing driving without a license, deeply regrets it, and is reflecting on his actions."
The company explained that the blackmailers had illegally taken Jeong's phone and threatened him using the unlicensed driving video. Despite the pressure, Jeong chose not to pay and immediately reported them.
Showplay added, "We will ensure our artist grows into a more responsible member of society through proper education and strict management. We once again extend our deepest apologies to fans and the public."
Jeong Dong-won is expected to face legal consequences for the driving violation but has received recognition for his decision to resist extortion and cooperate fully with authorities.
