Singer Sung Si Kyung's agency has admitted to running without proper registration for over 14 years and issued an apology.
On September 16, SK Jaewon stated, "We were unaware of the legal requirement to register as a pop culture and arts planning business. We have now recognized this oversight and are currently in the process of completing the registration."
The agency stressed there was no intentional wrongdoing. They explained that the company was established in 2011, about three years before the mandatory registration clause was added to the law.
"We sincerely apologize for causing concern," the agency added. "Moving forward, we will strictly comply with all relevant laws and operate with greater responsibility."
Background of the Controversy
SK Jaewon is a one-person agency headed by Sung Si Kyung's sister, Sung Mo. Despite being active since 2011, the company has never registered under the Pop Culture and Arts Industry Development Act.
According to Article 26 of the Act, agencies and artists operating as corporations or businesses with more than one person must register. Failure to comply may result in up to two years of imprisonment or fines up to 20 million KRW. Any business activities conducted without registration are deemed illegal and subject to suspension.
This case follows a similar controversy involving musical actress Ock Joo Hyun, whose agency was also found unregistered. Her side explained it as an "administrative oversight."
The incident highlights ongoing scrutiny over compliance within the entertainment industry.
