Rowoon and Shin Ye-eun are stepping into Disney+'s first original Korean historical series, transforming into a righteous merchant and a rugged dockside outlaw.
'Tackryu' tells the story of those fighting to protect the docks of Joseon—where merchants chasing justice, outlaws struggling to survive, and officials seeking power collide. The cast, including Shin Ye-eun, Rowoon, Park Seo-ham, Park Ji-hwan, Choi Gwi-hwa, and director Chu Chang-min, greeted fans during an outdoor stage event at the Busan Cinema Center on the 18th.
A Story Beyond Nobles and Aristocrats
Unlike traditional historical dramas focused on nobles, 'Tackryu' centers on the lower class. Joseon's docks, lifelines for countless families, were also battlefields of fierce competition, betrayal, and survival. Director Chu Chang-min, making his drama debut, emphasized that the show highlights raw realism over polished imagery. He quipped, "It's a drama where three handsome young actors appear alongside the rest of us scrappy ones. That's the fun part."
Characters Rooted in Reality
Shin Ye-eun plays Choi Eun, a sharp-witted merchant who earns more than most thanks to her innate talent. "I brought out a raw charm I've never shown before. That's the appeal," she said.
Rowoon takes on Jang Si-yul, an outlaw with no home or name to return to. "Being called by a name means you have somewhere to belong, but Si-yul doesn't have that," he explained.
Park Seo-ham, making his historical drama debut, prepared with a year of action and horseback training. Park Ji-hwan portrays the leader of the outlaws, constantly oppressed by outside forces, while Choi Gwi-hwa adds weight as a ruthless official who torments the protagonists.
A New Kind of Historical Drama
Director Chu praised the cast's dedication: "Shin Ye-eun's natural beauty, Rowoon's physicality, Park Seo-ham's martial arts work, and the veteran actors' powerful performances all shine here."
Shin Ye-eun expressed confidence: "It's a deeply layered drama. Audiences will naturally be drawn in and see things they haven't before."
'Tackryu' premieres on Disney+ with the first three episodes on September 26, followed by two new episodes weekly from October 3.
