Director Lee Sang-il's record-setting film Kokuhou will finally open in Korea.
Distributor NEW confirmed on September 24 that the movie will premiere nationwide on November 19. The film is notable for being the first project by a Korean director to surpass 10 million viewers in Japan.
Based on the novel of the same name by Yoshida Shuichi, Kokuhou follows the life of a kabuki actor born into a yakuza family, chronicling his rise to the prestigious status of a "national treasure." Japanese actor Ryô Yoshizawa plays the lead, while Shoya Kurokawa from Monster takes on the younger version of the character.
Despite its unconventional subject matter and nearly three-hour runtime, the film captivated Japanese audiences. Within 102 days of release, it crossed the 10-million ticket mark, becoming the second highest-grossing live-action film in Japan's history.
Korean audiences will now have the chance to see the landmark film in theaters starting November 19.
