"Gangster Film, But Not Cliché"…Jo Woo-jin Highlights What Makes Boss Special
by. ymchoi

The upcoming film Boss proves that even gangster movies can break stereotypes. Starring Jo Woo-jin, Park Ji-hwan, Jung Kyung-ho, Lee Sung-min, and Oh Dal-su, the movie blends comedy and heartwarming elements into the traditionally gritty genre.

A Different Kind of Gangster Story

Unlike classics such as New World and The Outlaws, Boss centers on gang members who refuse to become the next leader. Instead of fighting for power, they push the role onto one another, choosing instead to chase personal dreams—whether it's family happiness, becoming a chef, or pursuing higher education. Director Ra Hee-chan explained, "It's not about loyalty within the gang, but about identity and the pursuit of one's true dreams."

Jo Woo-jin as "Soon-tae"

Jo Woo-jin plays Soon-tae, the second-in-command of the Sikgu gang and an aspiring Chinese restaurant chef. He approached the role by dividing his character into two sides: the reluctant gangster and the passionate cook. To prepare, he studied demonstrations by star chef Yeoh Kyung-rae, learning how professional pride shows in facial expressions. "Soon-tae is someone who chases his second self so strongly that he wants to abandon his first," Jo said. He also revealed that the film's action scenes follow a "Jackie Chan style" — impactful but laced with humor, making them perfect for the Chuseok holiday.

Chemistry On and Off Screen

The cast's teamwork fueled the film's charm. Park Ji-hwan recalled, "Every shoot was unusual and fun. We often stayed after filming to discuss how to build up scenes together." Jung Kyung-ho added, "Working with senior actors who breathe life into every line was both an honor and a thrill." Supporting roles from Lee Kyu-hyung, Hwang Woo-seul-hye, Ko Chang-seok, and Oh Dal-su further elevate the entertainment value.

Comedy, Action, and Warmth

While Boss includes themes of gangs and crime, it delivers them with humor and warmth. "The premise of avoiding the boss's seat had to be believable as comedy," said director Ra. "We balanced the weight of crime themes with irony and lightness." Actress Hwang Woo-seul-hye described it as "a comic action film that still feels warm and affectionate."

Holiday Release and Expectations

Presented as a family-friendly Chuseok release, Boss offers both laughter and action. Jo Woo-jin admitted to the pressure of promoting it passionately, even losing 8kg during the process. "I thought Boss was the ninth batter, but it turned out to be the third batter with two outs in the ninth inning. I'll do my best to hit it," he said. Facing competition from Park Chan-wook's No Choice starring Lee Byung-hun and Son Ye-jin, the actor stressed, "It's not about rivalry, but about energizing theaters together."

The cast collectively wished audiences a fun holiday experience, encouraging families and friends to enjoy Boss on the big screen this Chuseok.
