First Ride Takes Off with Kang Ha-neul, Chaotic Comedy About Friendship
by. ymchoi

"It's the kind of movie where you just can't stop laughing," said actor Kang Ha-neul at the production presentation for First Ride.

The upcoming comedy stars Kang Ha-neul, Kim Young-kwang, Cha Eun-woo, Kang Young-seok, and Han Sun-hwa as a hilariously mismatched group of longtime friends embarking on their first trip abroad. Packed with unpredictable events and nostalgic humor, the film captures the joy and chaos of friendship that transcends generations.

A Perfect Casting of Five

Each character brings a unique charm: Kang Ha-neul as the obsessive perfectionist, Kim Young-kwang as the bright optimist, Cha Eun-woo as the handsome one, Kang Young-seok as the sleepy dreamer, and Han Sun-hwa as the lovable heart of the group. Their chemistry creates what the team describes as "extreme comedy synergy."

Kang Ha-neul in a New Comic Role

Kang plays Tae-jung, a former top-ranked student who became a political aide. Known as someone who goes to extremes once he's fixated, Tae-jung appears intelligent and composed but turns clumsy around his friends. Director Nam Dae-jung explained, "I thought it would be fun to see a smart character behave foolishly. Kang Ha-neul perfectly balances his intellectual image with comic timing."

Kang admitted the role reminded him of his real-life friendships: "It felt like stripping away social status and going back to being silly with old friends. The script was so vivid, I could see each scene playing out in my head, and I couldn't stop smiling while reading."

Reunion and Teamwork

The film marks Kang's reunion with director Nam after their 2023 hit 30 Days. "After the success of 30 Days, his scripts became even funnier. I didn't need long explanations to say yes," Kang said. Director Nam praised him in return: "Kang Ha-neul brings my stories to life like no one else. This film wouldn't be the same without him."

The rest of the cast also shined with natural camaraderie. Kim Young-kwang recalled, "Even after long shoots, it never felt tiring—just like going on a real trip with friends." Han Sun-hwa grew emotional when sharing Kang's encouragement on set, while Cha Eun-woo, currently serving in the military, sent a video message hoping audiences would "relive their school memories and youth through the film."

Release Date

With its chaotic humor and heartfelt nostalgia, First Ride promises a rollercoaster of laughter and emotion. The film opens in Korean theaters on October 29.
