Actor Im Si-wan returns as a killer with a twist, wielding dual sickles in Netflix's new action film The Mantis. At the production presentation held in Seoul on September 25, the actor revealed how grueling yet fated the project felt for him: "The endless action with sickles was tough, but I accepted it as destiny."
From Kill Boksoon to Spin-Off
Directed by Lee Tae-sung, The Mantis is a spin-off of the acclaimed film Kill Boksoon. While the original only mentioned the assassin's name, this movie develops a full backstory. The story follows Han-ul, nicknamed "The Mantis" (played by Im Si-wan), as he clashes with his close friend-turned-rival Jae-yi (Park Gyu-young) and legendary hitman Dok-go (Jo Woo-jin) for dominance in the assassin underworld.
Im Si-wan's Intense Preparation
To embody the role, Im immersed himself in action school training, practicing wire stunts and sickle combat until it became second nature. Co-star Park Gyu-young joked, "Whenever I turned my head, Im Si-wan was spinning in mid-air." The actor explained, "The name 'Mantis' fits because of the visuals. Since I had never used sickles before, I practiced constantly until it felt natural."
Beyond the Stereotype of a Killer
Unlike typical portrayals of contract killers, Im wanted to highlight Han-ul's humanity. "It's not just a story about a killer. There are fresh elements, like themes of starting over in life. He may look dark, but at his core he is warm. I worked to express those contrasts." Director Lee added, "The characters are not driven by events but by subtle emotional shifts, which guide their choices and actions."
Emotional Layers and Cast Chemistry
The film also explores complex emotional ties, especially between Han-ul and Jae-yi. Park Gyu-young described her character as both a friend and a rival, battling jealousy toward Han-ul's talent. Jo Woo-jin highlighted the ambiguous relationships: "You can't tell if it's affection, resentment, or rivalry—that mix adds depth alongside the action."
Stylish Action with Signature Weapons
Each assassin fights with a distinct weapon: Im Si-wan with dual sickles, Park Gyu-young with a longsword, and Jo Woo-jin with tonfa sticks. Director Lee praised the cast's passion: "The actors gave everything until the very last action scene."
Release on Netflix
With a blend of stylish combat and layered character drama, The Mantis is set to thrill both fans of Kill Boksoon and newcomers alike. The film will be released worldwide on Netflix on September 26.
