"The Boss" Tops Korean Box Office for 5 Consecutive Days, Draws 1.3 Million Viewers Over Chuseok Holiday
by. ymchoi

The Boss (directed by Ra Hee-chan) has maintained its stronghold at the top of the Korean box office throughout the Chuseok holiday weekend.

According to the Korean Film Council's integrated ticketing network, the film attracted 322,765 moviegoers on October 7 alone, bringing its cumulative audience to 1,308,145.

Fastest-Growing Korean Film in October Since the Pandemic

The film has held the No. 1 spot for five consecutive days. Remarkably, it surpassed the one-million-viewer mark within just five days of release — the fastest pace among Korean films released in October since the pandemic.

The Boss is a comedy-action movie that follows a group of gang members who, ahead of their organization's leadership election, engage in a fierce yet hilarious competition to avoid becoming the next boss. The unusual premise has caught the attention of audiences nationwide.

Family-Friendly Comedy with Mixed Reviews

Viewers have praised the film for being family-friendly and accessible to all generations. The chemistry between lead actors Cho Woo-jin, Jung Kyung-ho, Park Ji-hwan, and Lee Kyu-hyung has been highlighted as a key source of laughter and charm.

A distributor representative noted, "The film has revitalized the stagnant Korean comedy market. The synergy among the cast delivers genuine laughter to audiences."

However, not all feedback has been positive. Some critics pointed out that while the "gangster-who-refuses-to-be-boss" concept is refreshing, the storyline feels predictable, and the exaggerated comedic acting divided opinions.

Strong Competition at the Box Office

In second place is No Choice (directed by Park Chan-wook), starring Lee Byung-hun and Son Ye-jin. Despite high expectations, it remained in the runner-up spot over the holiday, drawing 180,812 viewers on October 7 and reaching a cumulative total of 2.2 million.

Coming in third was Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc – The Movie, which attracted 114,264 viewers that day, with a total of 1.26 million accumulated admissions.
