"Like fitting puzzle pieces." (Choi Woo-shik)
Rom-com masters unite. Choi Woo-shik and Jung So-min transform into a sweet-yet-fierce newlywed couple who enter a 90-day fake marriage for one goal — to win a luxury newlywed house.
They promise the purest form of romantic-comedy chemistry. With realistic romance and playful banter, the duo is ready to show why they're both unbeatable in this genre.
Fake Marriage, Real Chemistry
Director Song Hyun-wook said, "I gathered actors full of puppy-like charm. From visuals to warmth and cuteness, they have it all. They're perfectly optimized for a rom-com."
SBS held a press conference on October 10 for its new Fri-Sat drama Marry Me, Universe (Uju Marry Me, directed by Song Hyun-wook & Hwang In-hyuk, written by Lee Ha-na) at the SBS Mokdong Open Hall. Cast members including Choi Woo-shik, Jung So-min, Bae Na-ra, Shin Seul-gi, and Seo Beom-jun attended.
Choi Woo-shik, the "Accidental Husband"
Choi Woo-shik plays Kim Woo-ju, the only son of "Myungsoondang," a 80-year-old bakery brand. After returning from New York, he becomes a marketing manager — only to be asked on his first day to pose as someone's fake husband, flipping his calm life upside down.
"I've been drawn lately to projects that bring joyful energy to the set," he shared. "Working with Jung So-min, Shin Seul-gi, Bae Na-ra, and Seo Beom-jun felt like it would be fun."
This marks his first time playing a chaebol-type role. "I usually played guys running away from something," he joked. "This time, I drove nice cars, slept in fancy houses — it felt new. I imagined the classy lives of rich people I'd only seen on TV."
Jung So-min, the Energetic Bride
Jung So-min stars as Yoo Merry, the CEO of a small design studio. After being cheated on by her fiancé and falling victim to a housing scam, she enters a fake marriage to win a luxury 5 billion-won townhouse.
"I really loved Director Song's drama Another Oh Hae-young," she said. "I binge-watched it just before I got this script. That trust made me join this project."
Known for her romantic-comedy expertise from Playful Kiss and Mom's Friend's Son, Jung said, "Merry is bright and full of energy. I tried to express more than what was written."
Director Song praised her leadership on set: "Even with Seo Beom-jun, who plays her ex-husband, she rehearsed affectionately and helped ease everyone's tension."
Perfect Timing, Perfect Duo
The highlight lies in Choi and Jung's improvised chemistry. The two filled entire scenes with ad-libs. "The director calls 'cut' a bit late," Choi said. "So we just kept acting naturally, adding ideas that popped into our heads."
Jung added, "Whatever ad-lib Choi Woo-shik threw, I could catch it right away. It's my first time having such chemistry. I'd love to work with him again."
Director Song teased that viewers can expect "an ending worth waiting for," adding, "Although it's a rom-com, there's continuous tension and intertwined relationships that unfold like a chain reaction."
Season 2 on the Horizon?
He continued, "My target rating is 15 percent. If we reach it, we'll make another drama with the same two leads."
Jung So-min shared, "It's my first SBS drama in 15 years since my debut project Bad Guy. I worked hard with the mindset of going back to my roots."
Choi Woo-shik closed by saying, "They say when it rains on your wedding day, it means happiness. Since it's raining today, I hope that's a good sign. My goal is 15 percent, too."
Marry Me, Universe premieres tonight at 9:50 p.m. on SBS.
